About Dayton, OH

Dayton is listed as the sixth largest city in the state of Ohio, and is situated in the area known as the Miami Valley region. The history of Dayton dates back to the late 1700s and early 1800s, when a group of settlers known as "The Thompson Party" traveled the Great Miami River from Cincinnati to what is now the city of Dayton. Named for Revolutionary War Captain Johnathan Dayton, the city was incorporated in 1805. Hometown of the Wright Brothers, Dayton has a history that is rich in aerospace, aviation, and engineering research. The city is also home to the oldest military aviation museum in the world, the National Museum of the United States Air Force, located on nearby Wright-Patterson Air Force Base.

History plays an important part also in the architecture of the city. There are a total of ten historical districts that feature mansions as well as single-family homes in a variety of architectural styles including Tudor Revival, English Gothic and Craftsman. Dayton's courthouse buildings are also examples of Neoclassical architecture, dating back to the mid 1800s. The historic Oregon District is a commercial and residential area that houses a variety of art galleries, coffee houses, pubs and specialty shops that are appreciated by visitors as well as local residents.
